International Ride of Silence-May 21 7 PM
This year the Lehigh Wheelmen Association will join countless other cyclists around the globe to participate in the "Ride of Silence" on May 21 at 7 PM. This ride is to honor those cyclists that were either killed or injured in car/bike accidents. It is a one hour, solemn, silent ride at a very slow 10 MPH pace. The ride will start at the Allentown Fairgrounds. Our route will circumnavigate downtown Allentown. Our goal is to get over 100 cyclists to attend and ride. Please mark your calenders and help raise awareness about this vital issue. Each year over 700 cyclists in the USA lose their lives on the road. Many thousands are injured by automobiles. Just recently two more members of the LWA were involved in car/bike incidents.
The "Ride of Silence" is not "Critical Mass." Our goal is not to obstruct traffic or cause mayhem. We will obey all traffic laws including stopping for red lights and stop signs. The ride will only be just under four miles long. Riding at a very slow pace is more difficult that it first seems, and doing so in silence is even harder. We will have several volunteers from the LWA as ride leaders, but feel free to step up if you would like to lend a hand.
This ride is not just for the cycling "elite" but for everyone. Please pass the word around at work, in your church, or any other organization and try to get folks involved. We have a plan to attract media attention. We will also be soliciting the local bike shops in the Lehigh Valley as well as surrounding area bike clubs, schools, and colleges.
Keep tuned to this thread for more details. "The Ride of Silence" will be replicated around the world as 7 PM comes up on local time. Last year, over 300 cities participated. Please help me reach the goal of over 100 cyclists. We all benefit from a higher awareness of cyclists on the road. If you need more information, please email me. I will have posters and fliers available as we get closer to May 21.
